General information
Workplace : LNCMI-Grenoble
Type of Contract : Full Time Contract Scientist
Contract Period : 12 months, renewable up to 2 times (36 months in total).
Expected date of employment : 1 September 2019
Remuneration : Depending on experience, between 2500 and 3500 euros gross per month (1900 to 2550 euros net after deduction of the social security and income taxes)
Desired level of education : PhD
Experience required : Indifferent
Missions
The candidate will work in the NMR group at LNCMI-Grenoble, employing broadband Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) at the highest available magnetic fields (up to 37 T) and low temperatures (down to 50 mK) for experimental research in condensed matter physics. He/she will both develop his own research subject in the field of quantum magnetism or high temperature superconductivity, and assist the scientists that visit LNCMI to perform high-field NMR experiments on their own projects. Research in low-dimensional quantum antiferromagnets employs high magnetic field to induce “exotic” states of matter, such as Bose-Einstein condensates, magnetization plateaus, supersolid and spin-nematic phases. Investigations of high temperature superconductors employ high fields to suppress or weaken their unconventional superconductivity and thus reveal competing electronic states.
Activities
The postdoctoral researcher will perform scientific research using the NMR technique and, as a “local contact”, will provide support to scientists visiting LNCMI for high-field NMR experiments on their projects. In particular, he/she will :
– perform NMR measurements in superconducting and resistive high-field magnets at LNCMI-Grenoble and in pulsed-field magnets at Toulouse,
– prepare, improve and develop the NMR instrumentation as required by the experiments,
– analyse and interpret the experimental data,
disseminate the results through publications, reports and presentations for meetings and conferences,
– collaborate with members of other research groups at LNCMI and in other laboratories, in particular for complementary experiments by other techniques and for a theoretical description/interpretation.
Skills
The candidate should be motivated for topical research in a high-level international laboratory and is expected to have a strong scientific background. He/she should have experience in magnetic resonance (NMR or ESR, preferably in condensed matter) or/and in experimental studies of strongly correlated electron systems. Experimental skills are also essential. Finally, fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory.
Work Context
The research work will be mainly carried out at the Grenoble site of LNCMI, with occasional visits to LNCMI at Toulouse. LNCMI is one of a few laboratories dedicated to research in the highest available magnetic fields, and is open to visitors for their own high-field research projects. The role of a “local contact” for these external projects ensures the contact with many different research subjects and is thus strongly beneficial to young scientists.
Funding for this position is ensured for at least two years and up to three years.
Tentative starting date of the contract is on September 1, 2019.
Constraints and risks
Some high-field experiments may occasionally be performed during weekends and/or overnight. Persons with pacemakers or ferromagnetic metal implants cannot occupy this position because of the health risks related to the presence of strong magnetic fields.
Applications should include a cover letter and a CV mentioning at least two references and a complete list of publications and conferences.
