Research

The design and fabrication of non-destructive high-field magnets represent a significant challenge for materials development and selection because the component has both a structural requirement, i.e high tensile strength to sustain the Lorentz forces and a functional requirement, i.e low electrical resistivity to get the highest action integral an thus the longest pulse duration. The LNCMI-Toulouse is involved in the development of several copper-based high strength conductors:

  • macrocomposite wires (copper core in a stainless steel jacket)
  • nanofilamentary wires (copper/niobium, copper/tantalum)
  • carbon nanotubes – copper composites wires
  • silver – copper nanocomposites wires

The wire-drawing workshop, located in the basement of the building, allows such in-house development
