Copper based alloys for DC magnets

Fabrication of DC high field magnets requires the use of material with high mechanical properties to hold the electromagnetic forces and a low electrical resistivity to minimize the energy consumption due to the Joule effect.

The LNCMI, within a collaboration with the ICB laboratory, has developed its own process  from the fabrication of Copper alloy tubes  with a unique balance between mechanical and electrical properties.

This tubes are prepared by a dedicated  Cold Spray technology which  consists in a high velocity projection ( > 500 m/S) of specially optimized copper alloy powder. These materials are used for the most performant magnets in operation in Grenoble.
